Guangzhou FC was highly dominant in the Garuda International Cup (GIC) 2024, competing in the U-17 category.
The Chinese club won convincingly without conceding a single goal. In Group A, Guangzhou FC defeated the host team ASIOP Merah (1-0), Woodland Warrior (3-0), and Garuda Lampung (5-0).
In the quarterfinals, Guangzhou FC secured an impressive 8-0 victory against Thailand’s Vachiralai United. In the semifinals, Top Skor Indonesia acknowledged Guangzhou FC’s superiority with a 1-0 loss.
It turns out that Guangzhou FC fielded their best lineup in GIC 2024. The team includes three potential players for the China U-17 national team: Guo Wuyue (midfielder), Fan Mengtong (goalkeeper), and Chi Weilin (defender).
These three players form the backbone of the team. In fact, Guo Wuyue was the key to Guangzhou FC’s victory over Top Skor Indonesia.
They thoroughly enjoyed playing in GIC 2024, praising the tournament’s organization and excellent facilities.
“The facilities provided are excellent and give a sense of national pride. I’m very happy to be here and hope the team can continue to progress further,” said Guo Wuyue to the media at ASIOP Training Ground (ATG), Sentul, on Saturday (24/8).
“The field facilities are good, and the field crew has worked well together to meet our needs and assist us in many ways,” added Fan Mengtong.
GIC 2024 was held at ASIOP Training Ground, Sentul, West Java, from August 22-25, 2024. A total of 48 teams from eight countries—Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore—competed in three age categories: U-10, U-12, and U-17.
This year, the Garuda International Cup brought back the tagline “The Season is Coming, Let’s Have Fun,” emphasizing not only the competition but also the incredible sportainment atmosphere for players and spectators at ASIOP Training Ground, Sentul.
The venue also featured the Sompo Arena, offering exciting and fun games. Visitors could enjoy various food and drinks sold at bazaar stalls and be entertained by different performances. Additionally, during GIC 2024, a high school dance competition and a Mobile Legend tournament were also held.
