The 2024 Garuda International Cup youth football tournament officially began at the ASIOP Training Ground in Sentul, West Java, after being opened by the Garuda International Cup 2024 Advisory Board member, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, on Thursday.
This tournament features 48 teams from Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore, divided into three age groups: U-10, U-12, and U-17, and will continue until Sunday this week.
Several elite academy teams from Asia are participating in this tournament, including Guangzhou (China), Zhejiang (China), Shonan Bellmare (Japan), Tokyo Selection (Japan), ASIOP (Indonesia), and Johor Darul Ta’zim (Malaysia).
Hashim emphasized the importance of this tournament as it provides an opportunity for young Indonesian footballers to compete against international teams.
“I believe that by investing in youth tournaments like the Garuda International Cup, we can develop future Indonesian national team players, while also opening up significant economic opportunities and enhancing sports tourism,” said Hashim.
The tournament’s chairman, Wahyu Budiarto, described this event as the largest youth football championship in the country, which has been held four times with various breakthroughs and quality improvements.
The tournament was first held in Bandung in 2015 with participation from three ASEAN countries.
The number of participants has steadily increased to five countries in 2022, seven countries in 2023, and eight countries this year, Wahyu explained.
This year’s tournament carries the slogan, “The Season is Coming, Let’s Have Fun.”
