The Garuda International Cup is being held, with Indonesian teams competing against teams from Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand

The Garuda International Cup (GIC) 2024, a youth football tournament, started on Thursday (August 22). Teams from Indonesia are competing against clubs from Japan, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

A total of 48 teams from eight countries—Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore—are competing in three age categories: U-10, U-12, and U-17.

The tournament, which will run until Sunday (August 25), features elite academy teams from across Asia, including Guangzhou China, Zhejiang China, Shonan Bellmare Japan, Tokyo Selection Japan, ASIOP, and Johor Darul Ta’zim Malaysia.

In his remarks, GIC Project Director Wahyu Budiarto expressed his hope that the tournament would become a source of pride for Indonesia, as it is the largest international youth football championship held in the country.

“Garuda International Cup has been held four times, with breakthroughs and quality improvements,” Wahyu said.

“The first Garuda International Cup was held in Bandung in 2015 with participation from three ASEAN countries. The number of participating countries has increased to five in 2022, seven in 2023, and now eight in GIC 2024.”

“We hope that on the occasion of Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day, the Garuda International Cup 2024 will grow even bigger and become a source of pride for Indonesia on the world stage, especially as it highlights the iconic national symbol, Garuda,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, a Board of Advisory member for GIC 2024 who helped open the tournament, expressed his happiness and pride in the event.

“Garuda International Cup as a youth football tournament provides a great opportunity for players to develop their skills, build character on and off the field, and share moments with peers from other countries,” said Hashim.

This year, GIC continues with the tagline ‘The Season is Coming, Let’s Have Fun.’ The tournament offers not only matches but also an extraordinary sportainment atmosphere for players and spectators at the ASIOP Training Ground in Sentul.
