The Festivities of the 79th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence, the 2024 Elite Garuda International Cup Tournament Officially Begins.

The 2024 Garuda International Cup (GIC) youth football tournament officially kicked off at the ASIOP Training Ground (ATG) in Sentul, West Java, on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

A total of 48 teams from eight countries are participating, including Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore. They will compete fiercely in three categories: U-10, U-12, and U-17.

The tournament, which will run until Sunday, August 25, 2024, is set to be an exciting event, especially with the participation of top academy teams from the Asia region, such as Guangzhou FC (China), Zhejiang FC (China), Shonan Bellmare (Japan), Tokyo Selection (Japan), and Johor Darul Ta’zim (Malaysia).

The opening of GIC 2024 was a lively event, attended by thousands of people and featuring drone displays carrying flags and the tournament’s new trophy, along with dance performances and percussion.

Among those present at the GIC 2024 opening ceremony was a national figure, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, the younger brother of Indonesia’s newly elected President, Prabowo Subianto. He served as the Board of Advisory for GIC 2024.

In his speech, GIC Project Director Wahyu Budiarto expressed hope that this year’s tournament would become a source of pride for Indonesia. The Garuda International Cup is the largest international youth football championship held in the country.

“GIC has been held four times, with various breakthroughs and quality improvements,” said Wahyu Budiarto during his speech at ATG Sentul.

“The first GIC was held in Bandung in 2015 with participation from three ASEAN countries. The number of participating countries has since grown to five in 2022, then seven in 2023, and now eight in GIC 2024,” he added.

“On the occasion of Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day, we hope GIC 2024 will continue to grow and become a source of pride for Indonesia on the global stage. Of course, because we are raising the pride of the Indonesian nation, the Garuda,” Wahyu explained.

However, Wahyu mentioned that this tournament could not have been organized on such a large scale without the support of sponsors. Therefore, Wahyu wanted to express his gratitude to the GIC 2024 sponsors.

The 2024 Garuda International Cup Could Be a Venue for Nova Arianto to Scout Players for the U-17 National Team

The prestigious and largest youth football tournament in Indonesia, the Garuda International Cup (GIC), is set to return. The 2024 edition of GIC is particularly special.

This year, GIC 2024 will be held just five days after the 79th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia. Additionally, GIC 2024 could serve as a scouting opportunity for players for the Indonesian U-17 National Team.

The Indonesian U-17 National Team will compete in the 2025 AFC U-17 Championship qualifiers in Kuwait from October 19-25, 2024. The Garuda Muda squad is placed in Group F along with hosts Kuwait, Australia, and Northern Mariana Islands.

“We are always open with the federation (PSSI) regarding the annual GIC. We welcome any U-17 National Team coaching staff who wish to scout players at GIC 2024,” said Wahyu Budiarto, Project Director of GIC 2024, during a press conference at Hotel Swiss-Belcourt, Bogor, on Friday (August 16).

“Furthermore, we hope that GIC will once again produce players for the Indonesian National Team, as in 2023 when Ji Da Bin, Marselinus Ama Ola, and Meshal Hamzah, who are now in the U-19 National Team under Indra Sjafri, emerged,” added Wahyu.

GIC 2024 is scheduled to take place at ASIOP Training Ground, Sentul, West Java, starting August 22. The matches will run from August 22-25, 2024.

This edition will feature three categories: U-10, U-12, and U-17, expanding from the previous U-12 and U-17 categories. Eight countries will participate: Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore.

Among the participants is the Chinese giant Guangzhou Evergrande. Also joining are last year’s participants, the Malaysian powerhouse Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), and renowned Japanese club Shonan Bellmare. Not to be missed is the defending U-17 champion, ASIOP.

In the previous edition of GIC, ASIOP Merah was the top team in the U-17 category, while JDT emerged as the champion in the U-12 category.

Young Indonesian Talents Compete Against China and Japan in the 2024 Garuda International Cup

The youth football tournament, Garuda International Cup (GIC), will once again serve as a platform for young Indonesian talents. This time, GIC 2024 will include participation from East Asian countries like China and Japan.

This international youth football festival, the largest in Indonesia, will kick off from Thursday, August 22 to 25, 2024, at the ASIOP Training Ground in Sentul, West Java. The fourth edition of GIC will see participation from eight countries.

The eight participating countries include host Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore. The number of participating countries has increased compared to previous editions: seven countries in GIC 2023, five in 2022, and only three in the first edition in 2015.

Wahyu Budiarto, the Project Director, hopes that this youth tournament can be a platform for young Indonesian players to showcase their talents at an international level. He is also determined to continue producing quality players for the Indonesian National Team.

“This Garuda International Cup is increasingly meeting our initial expectations from when it was first held in 2015, that GIC could become an event for Indonesian football and establish itself as one of the best tournaments in Asia. The goal is to provide opportunities for young Indonesian talents to compete at the Asian level, and then at the global level,” he told the media on Friday, August 16, 2024.

In addition, GIC 2024 will host three age-group tournaments: U-10, U-12, and U-17. Previously, three participants from GIC 2023 have since become part of the Indonesian U-19 National Team under Indra Sjafri’s coaching: Ji Da Bin, Marselinus Ama Ola, and Meshal Hamzah.

“We also hope that GIC can continue to produce players for the Indonesian National Team, as in 2023 when Ji Da Bin, Marselinus Ama Ola, and Meshal Hamzah, who are now part of the Indonesian U-19 National Team under Indra Sjafri, emerged from this tournament,” he added.

Garuda International Cup, a Youth Football Festival Continues to Grow Towards Becoming the Largest in Asia

There are not many youth football tournaments in Indonesia that can offer an international experience. The Garuda International Cup (GIC) is one of the few, if not the only one.

The Garuda International Cup has been held four times since it was first organized in Bandung in 2015. The number of participating countries has increased with each edition.

In its inaugural edition, GIC 2015 was only participated in by academy teams from three Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

After a seven-year hiatus, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, GIC resumed in 2022 and has been held annually ever since. This event is gradually establishing itself as the largest youth football tournament in Asia.

The number of participating countries has continued to grow, starting with five countries in 2022 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines), seven in 2023 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan), and eight in 2024 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, China).

Here is a summary of the Garuda International Cup’s journey from its inaugural edition in 2015 to the latest edition in 2024, compiled by the Daily Sports editorial team.

**1. Garuda International Cup 2015**

Every significant breakthrough has its beginning. The concept of GIC as an international youth football tournament was conceived in 2015, with Bandung chosen as the venue.

GIC I featured 16 teams divided equally into two age categories, U-14 and U-16. ASIOP, the host, fielded two representatives in each age group.

In the U-16 category, the participants were Givova Football Academy (Singapore), Harimau Mega FC Johor (Malaysia), Royal Selangor FA (Malaysia), ISA-GFA (Malaysia), ANZA (Singapore), ASIOP (Indonesia), Tiki Taka Bandung (Indonesia), and ASIFA Malang (Indonesia).

The U-14 tournament featured Maesa Sulut (Indonesia), Harimau Mega FC Johor (Malaysia), Subang Jaya (Malaysia), Royal Selangor (Malaysia), ASIOP (Indonesia), ASIFA Malang (Indonesia), Tiki Taka Bandung (Indonesia), and Banteng Muda (Indonesia).

The champions of the Garuda International Cup 2015 were ASIOP in the U-14 category, while ASIFA Malang emerged victorious in the U-16 category.

**2. Garuda International Cup 2022**

After a seven-year hiatus, the second edition of GIC returned in 2022. The tournament’s location shifted to the ASIOP Training Ground (ATG) in Sentul, ASIOP’s latest training complex.

A total of 32 teams participated, divided equally between two different age categories (U-12 and U-17). Some of the participants were well-known football academies from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam.

In detail, the 16 teams in the U-17 category included ASIOP, ASIFA, Safin Pati, Sulut United, FABD (Brunei), Woodlands Warriors FC (Singapore), SID FC Kelantan (Malaysia), Central Visayas (Philippines), and Timnas Pelajar BLISPI.

The other 16 teams in the U-12 category included PSIS Development, Akademi Persib Karawang, Elang Mas Sriwijaya, Next Bali Generation, Best FC (Malaysia), AUFC (Malaysia), and ASIOP as the host.

The Garuda International Cup 2022 title was swept by the host ASIOP in both the U-12 and U-17 categories, a remarkable achievement for one of Indonesia’s top academies.

**3. Garuda International Cup 2023**

A year later, GIC III took place again at ATG Sentul. The number of participating countries increased to seven, and the event felt even more special as it was held just before the Indonesian Independence Day celebrations.

A total of 32 teams participated, divided equally between two different age categories (U-12 and U-17). The U-12 category was contested by nine international teams and seven teams from Indonesia.

The nine international teams included Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) Malaysia, Woodlands Warriors Singapore, Brazilian FA Brunei Darussalam, Best FC Malaysia, AT Putrajaya Malaysia, Apuesto Bueno Philippines, NFDP Malaysia, Hijau Kuning Malaysia, and Shonan Bellmare (Japan).

In the U-17 category, nine international teams also participated, including Melaka Sport School Malaysia, FC Katipunan Philippines, Central Visayas Philippines.

Other teams included Woodlands Warriors Singapore, Bangkok FC Academy Thailand, Fajar Selatan Malaysia, Apuesto Bueno FC A and B Philippines, and Bintang Gombak Malaysia.

The Malaysian academy Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) won the U-12 category, while the host ASIOP defended their title in the U-17 category.

**4. Garuda International Cup 2024**

This year, the Garuda International Cup once again demonstrates consistency in advancing youth football in Indonesia. GIC 2024 is set to be even more exciting, with participation from eight countries: Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore.

This marks the fourth edition of the tournament after successful events in 2015, 2022, and 2023. GIC 2024 will be held at the ASIOP Training Ground, Sentul, from August 22-25, featuring three age categories: U-17, U-12, and U-10.

This tournament is even more special as it coincides with Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day celebrations. GIC 2024 also offers a platform for the PSSI to scout the best talents to strengthen Indonesia’s youth national teams, particularly in the U-17 category.

“Garuda International Cup 2024 is moving closer to our initial vision from the first tournament in 2015—that this event could become a major football celebration for Indonesia and one of the best youth tournaments in Asia,” said GIC 2024 Project Director, Wahyu Budiarto.

He also expressed hope that GIC 2024 will once again produce new players for the Indonesian national team. Last year, Ji Da-bin, Marselinus Ama Ola, and Meshal Hamzah emerged from the tournament and are now part of the Indonesia U-19 national team under Indra Sjafri.

Clubs from 8 Countries Participate in International Youth-Level Tournament, which Could Also Contribute to Indonesia’s Youth National Teams

Several clubs from eight countries will participate in a youth-level tournament in Indonesia, featuring three categories: U-17, U-12, and U-10.

The tournament, titled Garuda International Cup 2024, will see participation from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) of Malaysia, Guangzhou FC of China, and Shonan Bellmare of Japan.

Additionally, teams like Woodland Warriors from Singapore, Zhejiang FC from China, De La Salle Zobel and Southridge Admirals from the Philippines, and Chiangmai FC from Thailand will also take part.

Other participants include Vachiralai United from Thailand, Fajar Selatan from Malaysia, Tokyo Selection White from Japan, Boeung Ket FC from Cambodia, HLGC from Malaysia, and Tokyo Selection Purple from Japan.

Producing Three U-20 Indonesian National Team Players

This youth-level tournament is expected to contribute to Indonesia’s youth national teams, as it did in 2023 by producing players like Ji Da Bin, Marselinus Ama Ola, and Meshaal Hamzah Bashier Oman.

Currently, Ji Da Bin, Marselinus Ama Ola, and Meshaal Hamzah Bashier Oman have successfully made it to the Indonesia U-20 National Team, coached by Indra Sjafri.

“We hope that the GIC can once again produce players for Indonesia’s youth national teams, just as it did in 2023 with Ji Da Bin, Marselinus Ama Ola, and Meshaal Hamzah, who are now part of the U-20 National Team under Indra Sjafri,” said GIC Project Director, Wahyu Budiarto.

International Tournament

Meanwhile, Shun Ogino, Director of Business Development at Shonan Bellmare, expressed his pride in being invited to this tournament, especially since it is an international event.

“First and foremost, the main reason we are participating in this tournament is, as I mentioned before, the most valuable aspect of this tournament is its international status,” Shun Ogino added.

“So the players can learn from players around the world, from different countries—how to communicate, how to play. If we play in Japan, we wouldn’t experience or learn these things.”

“I want the players to experience the international atmosphere, to feel the differences, the diversity, and I want them to grow. That’s the main reason why we are participating. Secondly, one key difference, and I think this is somewhat of the same answer.”

“In Japan, most people are Japanese, and, as you know, the opponents are also Japanese. There aren’t many foreign players in Japan. So this tournament offers a rare and very, very valuable experience that the players can gain. That’s the difference. Not completely different, but that’s the value,” he explained.

The youth-level tournament, now in its fourth edition following events in 2015, 2022, and 2023, will be held at ASIOP Training Ground, Bogor Regency, from August 22-25, 2024.

“China and Japan are serious contenders, as the teams coming to Indonesia include Guangzhou FC, known for their reputation in Asia, and Zhejiang FC from China. There’s also JDT from Malaysia, Shonan Bellmare from Japan, plus Tokyo Selection,” Wahyu revealed.

“Imagine teams from across Indonesia—from Sumatra, Kalimantan, Bali, and Java—having the opportunity to compete against these great teams. This, I believe, brings us closer to our hope that this tournament will become one of the best, not only in Indonesia but also in Asia. We hope it will become Asia’s Gothia Cup,” Wahyu added.

Malaysia will be represented by Johor Darul Ta’zim, while Shonan Bellmare from Japan, which competes in J-League 1, and Tokyo Selection will also participate.

“Indonesian teams are fortunate to have the opportunity to compete against such strong opponents. This is one of the best tournaments, not only in Indonesia but, hopefully, in Asia. The hope is that the Garuda International Cup will become Asia’s Gothia Cup,” he concluded.

7 Countries Compete in Garuda International Cup 2023

The international youth football tournament, Garuda International Cup, is now in its third edition. Garuda International Cup 2023 will take place at ASIOP Training Ground (ATG), Sentul, from July 6 to July 9, 2023.

This time, the third edition of the Garuda International Cup (GIC) carries the theme “The Season Is Coming.” It will feature 32 teams in the U-12 and U-17 age groups from 7 countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Thailand, and Japan.

In each age group, there will be 16 teams divided into 4 groups, with 4 teams in each group.

“We can ensure that this year will be more exciting because it will feature seven countries, compared to three countries in the first edition and five countries in the second edition. In the U-12 age group of GIC 3, 9 teams from abroad will participate, along with 7 teams from Indonesia. The nine international teams are Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) from Malaysia, Woodlands Warriors from Singapore, Brazilian FA from Brunei Darussalam, Best FC from Malaysia, AT Putrajaya from Malaysia, Apuesto Bueno from the Philippines, NFDP from Malaysia, Hijau Kuning from Malaysia, and Shonan Bellmare from Japan.

Meanwhile, the 7 Indonesian teams are ASIOP Merah, ASIOP Biru, DY FC Batam, Farmel FC, CS Private, Next Bali Generations, and Nahusam FA.

In the U-17 age group, 9 international teams and 7 Indonesian teams will participate. The nine international teams include Melaka Sport School from Malaysia, FC Katipunan from the Philippines, Central Visayas from the Philippines, Woodlands Warriors from Singapore, Bangkok FC Academy from Thailand, Fajar Selatan from Malaysia, Apuesto Bueno FC A and Apuesto Bueno FC B from the Philippines, and Bintang Gombak from Malaysia.

The 7 Indonesian teams in this category are Heijnes FS Papua, Safin Pati, ASIOP Merah, ASIOP Biru, Fatto Zapello, Ricky Nelson Academy, and Diklat Merden.

“We have invited Japan and Thailand as new participant countries in GIC 3 to enhance the tournament’s competitiveness. We know that Japan and Thailand have football quality above that of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. This can be a learning experience for young Indonesian players,” Wahyu said.

Garuda International Cup 3 (GIC 3) is not just a football tournament; it also features other sports and entertainment activities. With the Participation of 7 Countries, Garuda International Cup 3, 2023 is Being Held in a Distinctly Special

The international youth football tournament, Garuda International Cup 3 2023, is ready to be held.

This marks the third edition of the Garuda International Cup. The first edition was held in Bandung in 2015, and last year, in 2022, it was hosted at the ASIOP Training Ground.

This year, Garuda International Cup 3 will once again take place at ASIOP Training Ground (ATG), Sentul, Bogor Regency, from July 6 to July 9, 2023.

Including Indonesia, seven countries will participate in Garuda International Cup 3 (GIC 3), namely Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam.

There are two age categories that will be contested in GIC 3, namely U-12 and U-17. Each age group will have 16 participating teams.

Wahyu Budiharto, Chairman of the GIC 3 Committee, stated that this year’s tournament is especially significant.

According to him, this event also serves as a warm-up for the major event, the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023, which will be hosted by Indonesia in November.

FIFA has once again selected Indonesia as the host for the World Cup, this time for the U-17 age group.

“We can ensure that this year will be more exciting because it will feature seven countries, compared to three countries in GIC 1 and five countries in GIC 2. So, in terms of competition quantity, it has increased,” said Wahyu Budiharto.

Furthermore, Wahyu Budiharto mentioned that the quality of the tournament has also improved because this time, it is not only teams from Sulawesi or Sumatra participating.

Meanwhile, Novema Andryani, a member of the Steering Committee for GIC 3, believes that this tournament, sponsored by Transtama Logistics, Sompo Insurance, AQUA, Specs, RS EMC, City Trans Utama, and Joyday, will add to the excitement leading up to the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023 in Indonesia.

Furthermore, she believes that this tournament can serve as a platform for scouting players for the Indonesian U-17 National Team that will compete in the FIFA U-17 World Cup later.

“So, this is really great. For example, one of the participants from Malaysia, Johor Darul Takzim, is one of the best clubs not only in Malaysia but also in Asia because they have consistently participated in the AFC Cup, and their academy is outstanding,” said Novema Andriyani.

“Now, Indonesian youngsters have the chance to play against JDT. Besides, there is also Shonan Bellmare from Japan, and academies from Thailand participating,” she added.

Elen Bundiyanto, Director of Transtama Logistics, hopes that through GIC 3, the confidence and mentality of young Indonesian footballers can be further honed by competing against foreign teams.

“Because in terms of mentality and attitude, they are no longer inferior because from a young age, they have already learned and tried to compete against foreign teams,” said Elen.

The organizing committee of GIC 3 mentioned that this tournament holds particular significance as it is being held following Indonesia’s selection as the host country for the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023. The FIFA U-17 World Cup is scheduled to take place from November 10 to December 2.

Wahyu Budiarto, the Chairman of the GIC 2023 Organizing Committee, expressed his hope that Garuda International Cup 3 would add to the excitement in the lead-up to the grand event of the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023 in Indonesia.
