Superior at Garuda International Cup 2024, Guangzhou FC Relies on 3 Potential China National Team Players

Guangzhou FC became the highlight of the Garuda International Cup (GIC) 2024, a youth football tournament.

The Chinese club displayed such dominant performance that they advanced smoothly to the final.

It is known that Guangzhou FC secured a ticket to the GIC 2024 final thanks to consecutive victories over Thailand’s Vachiralai United in the quarterfinals (8-0) and Indonesia’s Top Skor in the semifinals (1-0).

Earlier, Guangzhou FC first dominated the group stage. They topped Group A after defeating the host ASIOP Merah (1-0), Woodland Warrior (3-0), and Garuda Lampung (5-0).

It was revealed that Guangzhou FC was strengthened by three players who recently participated in the selection for the China U-17 national team. They are Guo Wuyue (midfielder), Fan Mengtong (goalkeeper), and Chi Weilin (defender).

These three players have been the backbone of Guangzhou FC at GIC 2024. Guo Wuyue, in particular, became the key player in securing the victory over Top Skor Indonesia with the only goal in the semifinal on Saturday (August 24, 2024).

Regarding the GIC tournament, Guo Wuyue feels fortunate to have the opportunity to test his skills against other countries by participating in this youth football competition in Indonesia. He is very enthusiastic about gaining experience in this tournament.

“This is the first time I have experienced the atmosphere of a football match abroad. It’s really exciting to gain new experiences, and the facilities here are also excellent,” said Guo Wuyue to the media at ATG Sentul.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Fan Mengtong also expressed his happiness at having the opportunity to play in an international tournament outside of China. He was able to adapt to Indonesia’s typically hot and sunny weather during the day.

“Honestly, the weather here is cooler because the summer in China is much hotter. I am also happy to have come to this match,” he added.

Another potential Chinese national team player, Chi Weilin, admitted that he has developed a taste for Indonesian cuisine. He also felt comfortable thanks to the tournament staff’s readiness to assist them at any time.

“I hadn’t tried any of the food here before. The staff here have been very helpful. They work well to meet our needs,” said the tall defender who idolizes Manchester City player Ruben Dias.

In the GIC 2024 final, Guangzhou FC will face the host ASIOP Merah on Sunday (August 25, 2024). This match will also be a repeat of the opening game two days ago, which the visiting team won with a narrow 1-0 score on Thursday (August 22, 2024).

The international youth football tournament, Garuda International Cup (GIC) 2024, officially kicked off at ASIOP Training Ground (ATG) Sentul, West Java, on Thursday (August 22, 2024) morning.

A total of 48 teams from eight countries—Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore—will compete in three age categories: U-10, U-12, and U-17.

Running until Sunday (August 25, 2024), this tournament promises to be an exciting spectacle, featuring elite academy teams from across Asia, including Guangzhou China, Zhejiang China, Shonan Bellmare Japan, Tokyo Selection Japan, ASIOP, and Johor Darul Ta’zim Malaysia.

The opening of GIC 2024 was lively, with thousands in attendance and a range of performances including drone displays with flags and the GIC trophy, dance performances, and percussion shows. The event was also attended by national figures, including Hashim Djojohadikusumo, a Board of Advisory member for GIC 2024.

In his speech, GIC Project Director Wahyu Budiarto expressed his hope that the tournament would become a point of pride for Indonesia, as the Garuda International Cup is the largest international youth football championship held in the country.

“Garuda International Cup has been held four times, making breakthroughs and improvements in quality,” Wahyu said.

“We hope that on the occasion of Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day, Garuda International Cup 2024 will become even larger and a source of pride for Indonesia on the world stage, especially as it highlights the iconic national symbol, Garuda,” Wahyu added.

However, Wahyu noted that the tournament could not be held on such a scale without the support of sponsors. He thanked the sponsors including Transtama Logistics, Bank Mandiri, SOMPO Insurance, Tunas Muda Adhyaksa, Ethiopian Airlines, Belfoods, PT Rut Ester Berjaya Medan, Swissbel Hotel Court Bogor, City Trans Utama, Specs, Bluebird, Aqua, Naos, EMC, Glico, and Sunpride, as well as other supporters for making the tournament possible.

Meanwhile, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, a Board of Advisory member for GIC 2024, expressed his happiness and pride in the tournament.

“Garuda International Cup, as a youth football tournament, provides a great opportunity for players to develop their skills, build character both on and off the field, and share moments with peers from other countries,” Hashim said.

“Football involves winning or losing, but these children will always learn and gain something new from this development tournament. Win well, win sportingly. That is what we aim to teach through this tournament. I believe by investing in youth tournaments like Garuda International Cup, we can create future Indonesian national team players and also open up significant economic opportunities and enhance sports tourism,” Hashim added.

Hashim also noted that international tournaments like GIC are crucial for increasing the experience of young Indonesian players.

“This aligns with the programs of Pak Prabowo (Subianto) and Gibran Rakabuming Raka. I believe that if young players regularly compete in events or tournaments from U-10 to U-17, especially internationally like GIC, their experience will grow, and their track record will be monitored,” Hashim said.

“If these young players frequently participate in competitions or tournaments, they will come under the radar of national teams or professional clubs in a few years. With quality, high confidence, and experience from a young age, they will only need to be refined as they grow,” Hashim added.

This year, the Garuda International Cup continues with the tagline ‘The Season is Coming, Let’s Have Fun,’ meaning the tournament not only offers matches but also provides an extraordinary sportainment atmosphere for players and spectators at the ASIOP Training Ground in Sentul.

The venue features Sompo Arena with exciting games, a variety of food and drink stalls, and entertainment shows. Additionally, GIC 2024 will host a dance competition for high school students and a Mobile Legends tournament.

The coach of Tokyo Purple is impressed with the facilities at the GIC 2024 venue, ASIOP Training Ground

The facilities at the ASIOP Training Ground, the venue for the Garuda International Cup (GIC) 2024, have left a strong impression on the Japanese representatives.

Tokyo Purple, one of the teams from Japan participating in the U-12 category of GIC 2024, is making its debut in this tournament.

Tokyo Purple is grouped in Group D along with Diklat Merden, ASIOP Biru, and NFDP. They have successfully won their matches against these competitors.

After securing a spot in the quarterfinals, Tokyo Purple’s coach, Kotaro Imamura, expressed his admiration for the facilities at the GIC 2024 venue.

The GIC 2024 is being held at the ASIOP Training Ground in Bogor, which has been deemed comfortable for participating teams from other countries, including Tokyo Purple.

“I think it’s very comfortable, very accommodating, very cool,” said Kotaro Imamura in an interview with the media on Friday (August 23, 2024).

Despite this being the team’s first appearance at GIC, the coach has set high goals for Tokyo Purple, aiming for the championship.

“Of course, we want to win (GIC 2024). But beyond that, we are gaining experience and improving the players’ skills,” Kotaro Imamura stated.

However, he acknowledged that the competition in this tournament is quite fierce, making it challenging to achieve their goal of becoming champions.

“The competition here is pretty intense. Even though this is our first time here, we want to be the winners,” added Kotaro Imamura.

On Friday (August 23, 2024), Tokyo Purple played two matches, winning both with scores of 2-1 against NFDP (Malaysia) and 6-0 against Diklat Merden (Indonesia).

“The kids have worked hard to win, so we are definitely happy to celebrate,” said Kotaro Imamura.

The GIC 2024 has been underway since August 22, 2024, featuring teams from eight countries: Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore.

This year marks the fourth edition of the tournament, following previous events in 2015, 2022, and 2023, and it coincides with the celebration of Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day.

PSSI is ready to consistently provide full support for the Garuda International Cup event.

The youth football event, Garuda International Cup (GIC) 2024, is currently taking place at the ASIOP Training Ground (ATG) in Sentul, Bogor. This tournament, which has been held since 2015, has garnered serious attention from PSSI.

Eko Setyawan, a member of PSSI’s Executive Committee (Exco), stated that the federation consistently provides full support for the annual GIC event. He praised the GIC for hosting matches that are not only entertaining but also competitive, similar to international matches.

“For the Garuda International Cup (2024), I’ve been in close communication with Mr. Ade (Welington). Regarding recommendations and other matters, we (PSSI) fully support it. I apologize for not being able to attend the GIC 2024 opening,” said Eko.

“This Garuda International Cup tournament is excellent, with participation from several countries. There are also participants from the best leagues, such as Liga TopSkor and TSI. Additionally, Farmel is participating even though it’s not their age group,” he added.

“We intentionally included them to give them experience because this is a very good tournament. It also serves as preparation for the U-17 category for the national team,” he said.

The Garuda International Cup 2024 is being held from August 22-25, 2024, centered at the ASIOP Training Ground in Bogor. The event features teams from eight countries: Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore.

Garuda International Cup 2024 marks the fourth edition of the tournament, following previous events in 2015, 2022, and 2023. This year, there are three age categories: U-10, U-12, and U-17.

This edition is particularly special as it coincides with Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day celebration and serves as a platform for scouting players for Indonesia’s U-17 National Team.

In addition to the football tournament, GIC 2024 also features a dance competition and the Garuda Mobile Legend Tournament 2024.

Argha Esports emerged as the champion of the Garuda Mobile Legend Tournament 2024, which was held alongside GIC 2024. The runner-up position was claimed by ABZ X Ojay, and Hera secured third place.

Malaysia’s NFDP Team Appreciates GIC 2024, Hopes for Representation from South Korea

The Garuda International Cup (GIC) 2024 event has truly captured attention. In this year’s edition, at least eight countries from Asia are participating.

Besides Indonesia as the host, the participating countries include Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, and Australia. One of the regular participants in this event is NFDP.

The team, under the Malaysian Ministry of Sports, competes in the U-12 category. Muhammad Khairi, the coach of the NFDP U-12 team, highly appreciates the GIC 2024 event.

According to him, the competition at GIC is becoming increasingly competitive each year. He referred to the participation of teams from Japan, which makes the battle for the championship even more interesting and challenging.

Not intimidated by Japan’s strong presence, Khairi also hopes that in future editions, teams from South Korea or other strong football nations will participate.

“This year is very competitive because there are many teams from Japan, which wasn’t the case last year. Maybe in the coming years, there will be teams from Korea or other strong football nations,” said Khairi.

“It’s not about winning, as I mentioned, but about giving the kids the chance to experience competing against other countries,” he added.

Even though the presence of teams from Japan has made the competition for the championship tougher, Khairi remains undeterred and will continue to motivate his players to use this event to improve their quality and mentality.

“Yes, we don’t pressure the players to win. But we, the coaching staff, will try to give the kids the opportunity to experience an international tournament that is above the standard of the tournaments they usually participate in in Malaysia,” Khairi said.
“We hope that GIC will continue to grow and attract even better teams in the future,” he concluded.

The NFDP U-12 team has successfully advanced to the knockout stage or the top 8, which will take place on Saturday (24/8/2024) at ATG Sentul.
