Indonesian teams are ready to showcase their talents in this tournament, which has now been held four times.
The opening of the Garuda International Cup 2024 was a lively affair, attended by thousands of people and featuring drone displays carrying flags and the GIC trophy, as well as dance performances and percussion.
The event was also attended by national figure Hashim Djojohadikusumo, who serves on the GIC 2024 Board of Advisory.
In his speech, GIC Project Director Wahyu Budiarto expressed hope that this tournament would become a source of pride for Indonesia. He noted that the Garuda International Cup is the largest international youth football championship held in the country.
“The Garuda International Cup has been held four times, with various breakthroughs and quality improvements. The first GIC was held in Bandung in 2015 with participation from three ASEAN countries. The number of participating countries has steadily increased to five in 2022, seven in 2023, and now eight in GIC 2024,” Wahyu said.
“We hope that during this 79th Independence Day of Indonesia, the Garuda International Cup 2024 will continue to grow and become a source of pride for Indonesia on the global stage, especially as we highlight the pride of the Indonesian nation, the Garuda,” Wahyu added.
He also emphasized that the tournament’s success would not have been possible without the support of sponsors, to whom he extended his gratitude.
“We would like to thank our sponsors: Transtama Logistics, Bank Mandiri, SOMPO Insurance, Tunas Muda Adhyaksa, Ethiopian Airlines, Belfoods, PT Rut Ester Berjaya Medan, Swiss-Belhotel Court Bogor, City Trans Utama, Specs, Bluebird, Aqua, Naos, EMC, Glico, and Sunpride, as well as other supporters. With their support, this tournament has been able to run smoothly,” Wahyu said.
Meanwhile, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, who also officially opened GIC 2024, expressed his joy and pride in the tournament.
“The Garuda International Cup, as a youth football tournament, provides a great opportunity for players to develop their skills, build character both on and off the field, and share moments with peers from other countries,” said Hashim.
“In football, there are wins and losses, but these young players will always learn and gain new experiences from this development tournament. Winning well, winning with sportsmanship—that’s what we aim to teach through this tournament.”
Hashim added, “I believe that by investing in youth tournaments like the Garuda International Cup, we can create the future players of Indonesia’s national team, while also opening up significant economic opportunities and boosting sport tourism.”
This year’s Garuda International Cup carries the tagline “The Season is Coming, Let’s Have Fun,” highlighting that the tournament offers not just matches, but also an extraordinary sportainment atmosphere for players and spectators alike at the ASIOP Training Ground.
The venue features the Sompo Arena, offering exciting games, and visitors can enjoy a variety of food and beverages available at numerous bazaars, along with various entertainment performances.
In addition to the football matches, GIC 2024 will also host a high school dance competition and a Mobile Legends tournament.
